The Confucius Institute Headquarters (or Hanban) at the Office of Chinese Language Council International is affiliated to the Ministry of Education of China is charged to promote Chinese language and cultural exchange through the establishment of Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms. A Confucius Institute is a co-operation between a Chinese and a foreign university, located at the campus of the foreign partner university. Since the first Confucius Institute was launched in 2004, around 450 Confucius Institutes have been set up world-wide of which almost 150 Confucius Institutes in North America.
Some Confucius Institutes are specialised. This includes all three Confucius Institutes in Denmark: Copenhagen Business Confucius Institute at Copenhagen Business School, the Music Confucius Institute, a co-operation between the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen and the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the Confucius Institute for Innovation and Learning, a co-operation between Beijing Normal University and Aalborg University.
A Confucius Classroom is a Chinese language teaching program affiliated to a Confucius Institute and carried out at an independent school or educational institution. Today, there are 648 Confucius Classrooms world-wide. Five Confucius Classrooms are located in Denmark: at Støvring Gymnasium, Niels Steensens Gymnasium, Stenhus Kostskole and Gymnasium, EUC Nord and Viborg Katedralskole.
